Skär Organics is the business that keeps my marketing honest. It's one thing to advise clients; it's another to build a brand from nothing with your own money, get it through organic certification — and keep it there for six consecutive years — while selling real products to real customers.

The brand

Founded with my wife Chloë, Skär Organics makes the UK's first certified organic candles — beeswax dinner candles, tapers, pillars and aromatherapy candles with organic essential oils — designed and handmade in Yorkshire. The brand line is "Restore the home, rescue the world": purity, slow work and faithful stewardship, backed by actual certification rather than vague "natural" claims. That's not a marketing flourish — we've now passed six annual Soil Association inspections without compromise.

The photography and film

I shoot all of Skär's photography and videography: product stills, hand-craft process films, and the certification storytelling that does the brand's persuasion for it. The style — natural light, honest materials, work shown mid-process — has built an audience of 7,000+ on Instagram. When I advise founder-led product brands on content, this is the first-hand experience behind it: the record below.

The company it keeps

Craft brands are judged by their company. Skär's collaborations tell that story: an ongoing partnership with TOAST — the third collaboration landed this year, and every one has sold out; vessels hand-turned in oak by Joel Atkins; ceramics with Lizzie Fry; brass spun in a Cheshire workshop with fifty years of craft behind it. Partnerships like these aren't bought with media spend — they're earned with product quality and a brand told consistently well.

The systems

Organic certification demands full traceability. Rather than run it on spreadsheets, I built Skär's manufacturing records system — suppliers and organic certificates, ingredient lots, recipes, production batches, dispatches — with trace-back, trace-forward recall reports, mass balance and a full audit log. It runs on Netlify with a Postgres database, was built with AI-assisted development in days, and it's the system we walk Soil Association inspectors through every year. Five passes and counting.

Why it's on a consultancy site

Because it proves four things at once: I can build a brand (founder), produce the creative (photography and film), earn the partnerships (TOAST), and ship the systems (compliance software). For the organic and artisan sector specifically, this experience powers Organic Guardians — my dedicated consultancy for organic businesses — and Gleaned, the offers platform on the side of the farms.
