Apex Hydraulics: penalty recovery to 700% organic growth
A Google penalty inherited from a previous agency, recovered to 94% organic visibility — then grown: top positions on the money terms and organic traffic up over 700%, powered by technical SEO, video, photography and trade-press PR.
The challenge
Apex Hydraulics — an internationally recognised specialist in hydraulic cylinder manufacture and repair — came to me in the worst starting position a client can have: a Google penalty, inherited from a previous SEO agency's link building. Rankings suppressed, trust damaged, and an understandable wariness of SEO consultants in general.
Phase one: the recovery
The work started with a full situational analysis — keyword and topic research, backlink audits, competitor review and on-site factors — mapped against Apex's actual commercial priorities, so the recovery targeted the products and services that make money.
Then the unglamorous part: identifying, removing and disavowing the harmful historical links, rebuilding on-site fundamentals, and replacing manipulation with the real thing — an online PR strategy targeting the trade magazines Apex's customers actually read, with content worth placing and genuine editor relationships.
Organic visibility shifted from 11% to 94% (Advanced Web Ranking's visibility index across the tracked keyword set — the share of available ranking real estate the domain holds). The domain-authority recovery lifted every category on the site — including ones the campaign never directly targeted. That's what a genuine reputation repair looks like to a search engine: not a trick reversed, but trust rebuilt.
Phase two: the growth campaign
With trust restored, the follow-on campaign targeted Apex's hydraulic oil filtration services: on-page optimisation, site architecture and internal linking, conversion-focused copy and CTAs — plus video and photography I produced for the product galleries, and continued trade-press placements.
- Organic visibility across the target filtration terms grew from 35% to 95%
- The landing page took top positions on Google and Bing for the primary head terms
- Organic traffic grew over 700%
The content that did the ranking
B2B content only earns links and rankings when it survives scrutiny by the reader's engineers. For Apex that meant writing with real numbers: the customer case study I produced on their Corex-coated cylinders for UK Coal documented service life extended from 4–8 weeks to 15+ months in a corrosive underground environment, with a 12-month cost comparison of roughly £38,500 against £11,200. Educational pieces like "How to prevent hydraulic cylinder failure" worked the same way — genuinely useful engineering guidance carrying the client's USP. A maintenance engineer doesn't buy adjectives; neither does an editor.
Why this case matters
Two lessons this engagement proves. Penalty recovery is real — subtraction first, then legitimate authority-building; the same playbook I now apply to helpful-content and AI-content demotions. And online PR is not optional in competitive B2B: on-page work alone got Apex nowhere near complete visibility; trade-press authority finished the job. Both disciplines live in my SEO consultancy today.
